Multipurpose Trailer Hauls Different Types of Boats and Cargo

MPG535 In Use

This heavy-duty trailer with 78" crossbars has extensive space to mount accessories like watersport carriers, bike racks, a fishing rod carrier, or a cargo box (sold separately). With a 7-1/2' long tongue, this trailer offers exceptional clearance during tight turns. The extended tongue also makes it easier to back up the trailer and prevent binding than trailers with shorter tongues.

Compact, Vertical Storage

MPG460XT retractable tongue

This MicroSportXT trailer has a retractable tongue and rubber bumpers, allowing you to store the trailer vertically.

mpg460xt pin removed

To retract the tongue, remove the metal pin and clip holding the tongue in place and disconnect the wiring harness that runs through the tongue.

mpg460xt tongue pinned

Then, push the tongue towards the back of the trailer until it is aligned with the bracket mounted on the rear cross member. Finally, slide the tongue on the bracket and place the pin and clip in the aligned holes to secure the tongue in place.

mpg460xt rubber bumper

With a smaller footprint, you can stand the trailer upright, using the rubber bumpers attached to the rear cross member to support the trailer's weight.

Submersible LED Trailer Lights

MPG535 LED tail lights

The DOT-approved tail lights on this trailer are fully submersible, so you don't have to worry about damaging the lights when loading and unloading your boat in water. Each tail light has brake, running light, and turn signal functions, as well as side marker lights and reflectors. In addition, these LED lights last longer, burn brighter, and require less power than incandescent bulbs.

Plug-and-Play Trailer Wiring

CE48870 main harness to 4-way

The wiring for this trailer has a simple plug-and-play design, so it doesn't require any cutting or splicing to install. As you assemble the trailer, route the main wiring harness through the trailer tongue and down towards the body of the trailer. Then plug the 4-wire end of the tail light harness into the main harness.

CE48870 4-way plug

Run the wires of the tail light harness along the sides of the trailer frame and plug the individual wires into the matching wires on the side marker lights and the tail lights. The wires are color-coded so that you can easily match them up - no circuit tester is required. Once all of the wires are plugged in, use the included clips to secure the harness to the frame.

CE48870 4-way plug

When you're ready to connect the trailer to your vehicle, simply plug the trailer end of the main harness into the 4-way flat connector on your vehicle.

Leaf Spring Suspension

MPG535 leaf spring suspension

This trailer includes a leaf spring suspension system to limit road shock while you tow. A sturdy steel axle runs beneath the trailer frame. The 2 slipper springs that support the axle flex to absorb the rough motion that can occur when driving over bumpy terrain. Also, the axle, spring hangers, and tie plate are galvanized to resist rust and corrosion.

Quick and Easy Trailer Hookup

MPG535 trigger style coupler

Hooking this trailer to your vehicle is quick and easy. The trailer's coupler connects to a 2" hitch ball, and the included safety chains act as an emergency measure if the coupler accidentally disconnects from your hitch ball. A rubber coated lift handle is mounted to the coupler to provide a solid grip for lifting or maneuvering the trailer. Finally, the skid plate on the underside of the trailer tongue keeps the coupler from touching the ground.

Very nice, haven’t used it yet but I’m sure it will exceed my expectations!

by:

We have had good success.

by:

Though I haven’t used the trailer yet It went together very easy and looks to be of top quality I will submit a picture with our kayaks on it very soon

by:

Clear instructions. Strong trailer. 2 hrs to put together.

by:

Awesome little trailer. I would recommend e trailer. Good pricing. Good customer service. Communication is great.

by:

This product has been a God send for us. Using the kayaks has never been easier especially for the wife. She can handle her Kayack by herself with no help from me. The assembly was not bad at all especially for me as I am not mechnically imclined. Love this product.

by:

Great little trailer. Stores against garage wall and easily moved by one person. THE BAD, assembly was plagued with numerous missing parts. Malone was was very prompt with getting what I needed.
Assembly was delayed about 30 days.

by:

Good trailer. Had to modify a bit for Hobie proangler kayak. Having a set of deep sockets makes trailer assembly easier. Does not bounce around on rough non-paved roads as much as I thought it would.

by:

Great lightweight trailer. Tracks well and I’ve taken it all through many trips and get questions and compliments at all the boat ramps.

by:

Great trailer so light you don't even know its behind you. Tracks well and looks stylish. Great customer service too. I will always use etrailer for my trailer needs.

So far I’m very happy with this trailer. I haven’t actually used it yet, but one of the reasons I picked the trailer because the tongue retracts for storage which was a big plus’s for me. It is light enough too, where I can maneuver it by myself for storage. As I’m getting older, this trailer will make it so much easier for me to transport my kayaks. I also needed a trailer that could transport my 17 foot kayak. The trailer can also be used to carry bicycles and other gear. The trailer could also be used to transport long pieces of wood. I’m looking forward to putting the trailer to good use.

by:

Nice trailer! I liked the quality, but I was disappointed when I started to install the tires on the trailer and tighten up the lugs. It requires a thin wall socket and typically people have a standard wall socket which doesn't fit this wheels. Come on Malone, it is not even a $10 item, include the item in the package. I wasted time going to auto stores and was not able to find one. I had to order one from Amazon and wait to get delivered to finish the trailer.

by:

The XT is a nice trailer for the price and I was able to assemble it working 1-2 hours a night after work relatively easily. Total build time was 5-6 hours and I was doing it leisurely to avoid mistakes. One area that might cause trouble occurs when the retractable tongue box is mated up to the frame. Make sure the two sides of the frame are even/symmetrical as you tighten everything up. Use a rubber mallet to gently adjust if needed. The only area of questionable design for me (and others consulting [online videos]) is how little clearance there is between the fenders and the side running lights. As well, the fenders are not totally flush with the frame/they actually pull tight to the heads of the carriage bolts holding the tail light assemblies which seems like a design flaw to me.

Another focus of this review is the excellent support I received after the sale. Firstly, I ordered this over the phone and it shipped same-day thanks to Hally and the folks in the packing/shipping group. I found that I did not immediately receive the paperwork needed to register/plate the trailer; I reached Nicholas who followed-up and had them in the mail that same day. Finally, when I was titling it at my State's Office of Motor Vehicles, I found that I neglected to bring a copy of the receipt showing that etrailer collected the sales tax. Dianna quickly researched my order and not only emailed a copy of the trailer VIN, sale's tax, sale price, etc. to my local Branch, she also patiently waited on the phone with me for a good 5-10 minutes while the agent double-checked that info and physically titled the trailer. I am extremely happy with this level of customer support after-the-sale, and highly recommend etrailer.

The Malone Microsport XT has proven to be a great addition to my kayak experience. I have a Jackson Big Tuna, which is a great fishing platform, but at almost 15 feet and 100 pounds it was beginning to get more difficult to top load. The Microsport XT fit the bill.

Thank you etrailer for making this happ en.

The trailer itself is excellent. Well designed, and everything fits together nicely.

That doesn't mean there wasn't any cussing involved. The instructions are barely adequate. In fact, they're really bad by any meaningful standard. Which means you end up guessing quite a bit and having to redo some of the steps. The packaging was excellent with well labeled bags of hardware, with zero references in the instructions on which labeled bags of hardware were to be used in what areas.

All the hardware was present, but I did make a trip for extra washers because I used washers where there weren't washers expected. But again, the instructions on one line will tell you not to use washers, and the other line doesn't so you use a washer, then 17 steps later you find out you're now short on washers.

An air or battery powered ratchet will save you a lot of time. Everything uses locking nuts which means you end up ratcheting a few inches on every bolt with not a lot of room in places to get a good swing on a handheld ratchet.

I also needed to pick up a different 21mm socket for the lug nuts because there's not a lot of space between the lug nut and the rim. An impact socket will not fit in there which is what I had in that size.

Other than that this could be put together with: (and yes, it comes with both SAE and Metric hardware.)

9/16th Deep Well Socket (14mm worked on some nuts but not all)
9/16th Box End Wrench
3/4 Deep Well Socket (19mm)
3/4 Box End Wrench (19mm)
10mm Socket
21mm thin wall socket

Large Flathead Screwdriver
Mallet

Took about 4 hours with two people using an air ratchet for a lot of the work.

Very impressed by the tires. The will be very nice for a long road trip. The wiring harness was impressive too. The LED version was two pieces, the rear piece and the extension piece. The extension piece was simple. However, the rear piece was so brilliantly manufactured that all of the side lights and tail lights were plug-n-play and the color coding was fool proof. I'm glad I had my impact drill and socket set adapter or I would have been cranking on nuts and bolts for a while. It did take me more than 3 hours to put together but it was a fun project. Coupled with the Malone Stax Pro2 Two Kayak Rack and two Swagman Upright Roof Bike Carriers we will easily haul our two kayaks and bicycles regional and for longer road trips with my 2015 Hyundai Sonata.

by:

Overall this has been a great acquisition. I live in a townhouse in a largely retirement community where restrictive covenant are...well restrictive. I have a modest sized garage and I would be obliged to store my Hobie PA14 and trailer in the garage or take it off site. The retractable tongue has made storing the trailer a breeze.

I have had no problems with the trailer structurally whatsoever. I had an issue initially with the wheels being badly out of balance but chalk that off to my inexperience. I changed out the tires to another set that was rated for max speeds of 80 mph. My son in law and I put both his kayak and my Hobie on the trailer and we take off to the eastern NC coast or HHI and I've never had a problem. Added a DrawTite hitch silencer which really quieted things down when pulling in my Outback. Malone mounting blocks really work well for my Hobie water wings. Also added a recent spare mounting bracket which also has worked well.

Absolutely no problems with the electric circuits and lights in salt water.

Overall great trailer. Couldn't be happier. Malone makes the best kayak trailers out there. etrailer has been great too with ordering, service , and overall reliability.

by:

I waited a long time after I placed my order to get my trailer. But finally got it after almost two months. The trailer looks great got it in 6 boxes assembled it. Was some issues with the certificate of Origin was not sent to me. But finally got it today. So everything is on the go. I buy a lot from etrailer never got any issues. Great place to buy from. They have to improve their phone lines sometimes you have to wait almost one hour for someone to answer your concerns. That is the only thing that sucks with them.

Thank you for your review. This item is always shipped via freight so always consider the time. The paperwork is sent separate after the trailer is shipped. It usually arrives within 10-14 business days and ships via Priority Mail.

Love our kayak trailer! So easy to maneuver around and with the retractable tongue it is perfect for storing in our garage. Would definitely buy again from this company! Great customer service and products!

Awesome trailer! Still love it - can’t wait to get it out for the season but love that it didn’t take up much room in the garage over the winter months! Highly recommend.

by:

Videos & written instructions made assembly easy. Quality of parts created stable end product.

by:

Painted blue, and a pvc coated wire basket for gear storage with a bungee net cover. Stores my 16 ft. Xcat with sailing and rowing package plus my Blackfin SUP on top.

by:

Very happy with trailer. Fairly easy to assemble but directions could be better. Took about 4 hours to build basic trailer by myself. Additional 1.5 hrs. to add carriers, spare tire, kick stand, etc.

by:

So far this seems like a great little trailer. The build instructions were very clear & hardware bags were sorted by each build step. I enjoyed putting the trailer together. I was fortunate to have air ratchets. These saved time running the nuts onto the bolts then finished by hand tightening. As other posts indicate, the fenders are a bit tough to mount. Stay patient and with a little “manly” effort they will go on. A special thanks to Sarah in customer service that assisted with modification to my bill of sale as I was standing in the Tag & Title Company. etrailer is outstanding!

I really love this trailer. I have received a number of compliments on it. I hauled my kayak on a few 200+ mile road trips this summer. No issues at highway speeds or steep grades up and down mountains.

  • Can The Malone LowBed Kayak Trailer Use The Retractable Tongue Kit # MPG494
Hey Russ, The only difference between the LowBed MicroSport # MAL25FR and MicroSportXT # MPG460XT is the load bar support beams. The beams are longer for the XT giving it a taller height, whereas the low bed has shorter supports. You'd be able to use the Retractable Tongue Kit for Malone MicroSport Trailers # MPG494 on the LowBed # MAL25FR, but we don't currently offer the shorter support tubes to convert the MicroSportXT # MPG460XT to a LowBed model. The Malone EcoLight Sport Trailer # MAL73FR you were looking at won't fit with the bunks but the Malone EcoLight # MAL53FR without the bunk boards will. The trailer itself is 10' 9" long and could work with a different carrier style like the SeaWing # MPG107MD or MegaWing # MPG207. Hello Kevin, thanks for reaching out. The Malone MicroSport Trailer # MPG462G2 can indeed be used to transport 4 kayaks like the Old Town Predator 13’ and LL Bean 9’. The J-style carriers allow the kayaks to be stored on their side, so the width of the kayak generally is not a factor. Malone lists the EcoLight with 8-inch wheels and 4.80/4.00-8 Load Range B tires, and the current EcoLight specs rate that wheel package to 65 mph.
